About the School

A school built around
your life in Japan

Most Japanese schools teach a standardised curriculum designed for tourists or students back home. Nihongo Academy is different.

We work with foreigners who are already here — navigating daily life, work, paperwork, and relationships — and who want their Japanese to catch up to the life they're building.

Every student has a different starting point and a different reason for being in Japan. Our coaching reflects that. There are no fixed syllabuses, no group classes to keep pace with, no content that doesn't apply to your actual situation.

Just focused, personal coaching that moves you forward — at the pace that's right for you.

What We Teach

Japanese that works
outside the classroom

Japanese study materials
01
Practical, everyday Japanese
Reading official documents, navigating city offices, handling medical appointments, talking to your landlord — the real situations you face every week.
02
Workplace and professional Japanese
Keigo, email etiquette, meetings, and workplace culture. The unwritten language of Japanese professional life that no textbook explains.
03
Conversation and natural speech
Getting comfortable speaking — not just translating in your head, but thinking and reacting in Japanese with real confidence.
04
Reading and writing (including kanji)
We build literacy progressively, prioritising the kanji and vocabulary you actually need for your level and your daily context in Japan.
05
JLPT preparation
Structured preparation for N5 through N2, built into your overall coaching plan — not a separate course bolted on at the end.
Our Approach

How we think
about learning

Language is learned through use, not memorisation. Our coaching is built around the reality of your life in Japan — so that everything you study has somewhere to go the same week.

Completely personalised
No two students have the same sessions. Your coaching is built around your level, your goals, your schedule, and what you're actually dealing with in Japan right now.
Context before grammar
We start with the situation you're in, then teach the language you need for it. Grammar is explained as it comes up — not drilled in isolation.
Progress over perfection
The goal is communication, not exam scores. We push you to use Japanese before you feel ready, because that's when the real learning happens.
Speaking and listening first
Reading and writing are important — but spoken fluency is usually the most urgent need for people living here. We prioritise accordingly.
Consistency over intensity
Regular, shorter sessions outperform occasional marathon study. We build a routine that fits your week and keeps momentum going between sessions.
Culture, not just language
Japanese language and Japanese culture are inseparable. We teach you to understand the context behind what's being said — not just the words.
Programs

Find your starting point

Whether you're picking up hiragana for the first time or pushing toward natural conversation, there's a program built for your level.

Beginner
Foundations
Start from zero. Learn hiragana, katakana, and the survival Japanese you need for everyday life in Japan. Build the habits that make everything else possible.
Intermediate
Breakthrough
Move from getting by to getting comfortable. Handle official situations, hold longer conversations, and start reading the world around you in Japan.
Advanced
Fluency
Eliminate the gaps between what you want to say and what you can say. Master keigo, nuance, and the natural patterns that make you sound at home in Japan.
About the Founder

Taught by someone who
lived this journey

Nihongo Academy was created by a foreigner who moved to Japan with almost no Japanese and built fluency through years of daily life — not language school.

After more than a decade of navigating Japanese bureaucracy, workplaces, neighbourhoods, and relationships, the curriculum here isn't theoretical. It comes from direct experience of what it actually takes to become fluent when you're living the language every day.

The coaching approach is shaped by one simple observation: the foreigners who make the most progress are the ones who use Japanese in real situations from the very beginning — and have someone guiding them through it.
